Odunde Festival — Celebrating African and African-American Heritage
The Odunde Festival, one of the largest and longest-running African-American cultural street festivals in the United States, brings vibrant celebration to South Philadelphia every year. Founded in 1975 and inspired by Yoruba traditions, Odunde means “Happy New Year” and honors the rich heritage of the African diaspora through community, culture, music, food, and art.
Each June, the festival transforms 15-plus blocks of the city with a colorful procession to the Schuylkill River, lively performances on multiple stages, an authentic marketplace featuring global vendors, and diverse food offerings that reflect African, Caribbean, Brazilian, and soul-food traditions.
Whether you’re exploring traditional crafts, enjoying live music, or dancing in the street with thousands of visitors from around the world, Odunde delivers an unforgettable cultural experience rooted in history, unity, and celebration.
